A family

Familie Tement mit Vater und Söhne

In the beginning there is

passion

Families are the sum of their individuals and each of their personal experiences. A young Manfred Tement had to take over the small family winery after his father passed away far too early. Three hectares to the left and right of the house. It wasn’t planned to happen that early. The only starting advantage he had was his fathers good reputation. Since then a lot happened and evolved. Some things were added on, others taken away. One thing never changed though: the love towards wine and this particular stretch of land and the confession to absolute quality. A guideline that is followed through until this day by Armin and his brother Stefan. Born and raised with the winery, the brothers literally did not know any other way. A framework in which the brothers grew, learned and developed. They learned to walk a path where consistency and modification go hand in hand. Those who merely continue what their ancestors did, without questioning, stay spellbound without the chance to ever see something with their own eyes.

The winery Tement is born! Everything gets started by Josef and Edina Tement with just two hectares of vine. The vineyards “Zieregg” and “Grassnitzberg” split to the left and the right of the house and a traditional Styrian wine tavern set the starting point of the winery.

1976

The family winery is taken over by Manfred at the age of 16, after the sudden death of his father Josef. He is attending the well regarded wine growing and fruit farming school in Klosterneuburg during weekdays and works alongside his mother Edina in his free time. The winery gets financed by money earned in the wine tavern, far away from being profitable by itself. His fathers drive for absolute quality turns into Manfreds mantra, mission and purpose in life.

1986

1982 Manfred gets to know Heidi. A perfect match to keep writing on the history of the families winery. Four years later their first son Armin Manfred Josef is born.

The same year Manfreds starts a collaboration with like-minded winemakers of the wineries Gross, Polz and Sattler. This should become the foundation for the famous “STK - die Steirischen Terroir- und Klassikweingüter” association.

1991

A second son is born: Stefan Josef Martin. By now the winery is able to finance itself. For the first time Manfred Tement reaches his personal goal to sell 100 bottles of wine a day. In order to put all efforts, strength and willpower into the winery the wine tavern has to be shut down.

Things couldn’t get better. In an international tasting by the famous German magazine “Der Feinschmecker”, the Sauvignon Blanc of the winery Tement gets selected to be “the worlds best Sauvignon Blanc.” This marks a breakthrough in terms of international recognition.

1999

New challenges need more room, so the new cellar in the vineyard “Zieregg” is built. The building has several stories and gets integrated in the unique landscape its surrounded with. It is modern, functional and gives visitors a stunning view on neighboring vineyards of South- & East-Styria and the bordering Slovenian vineyards in Ciringa (Slovenian for “Zieregg”).

2005

Armin finished his education and several internships abroad and within Austria. It’s time for him to start working at the family winery. He works side by side with his father Manfred and gets trusted with the responsibility of the whole production in 2008. The two of them make a good team and easily agree on working their vineyards under the principles of organic agriculture. The first 10 hectares get turned into 100% biological cultivation with more and more vineyards following.

At the same time they plant Sauvignon Blanc on the neighboring vineyard Ciringa (Slovenian for “Zieregg”), a vineyard that was bought the year before and shall become the base for a new winery. The “Domaine Ciringa” is born.

2010

Manfred and Heidis younger son Stefan joins the team after graduating from the renowned wine growing school “Silberberg". Stefan has a reputation as thinker and technician. He often shows different perspectives and tends to handle things unconventionally. That brings an exciting change to the winery and challenges the - now - Winemakers-Trio.

2012

The years of strong women begin: in 2011 Armin meets Monika and in 2012 Heidi fulfills her lifelong dream with the first of six “WINZAREI”-Chalets on the Zieregg. Those little houses, exclusively and lovingly arranged, work as a retreat of peace and quiet for their guests. Put together with the wine of the estate, one can see the expression of a special way of celebrating live.

In the end of October 2012, Johann Josef Manfred is born, and with him the fourth “Tement generation” is started.

2015

After a 10 years conversion period the winemakers decide to officially convert all vineyards (80 ha in Austria, 20 ha in Slovenia) to biological-organic winemaking. As if that was not enough work for the family in that year, eight more “WINZAREI”-Chalets get built, this time in Ciringa Menhard.

In November of the same year Armin and Monikas daughter Josefine Magdalena is born.

2018

With the harvest of 2018 Tement is officially certified biological-organic. In 2019 the vineyards in Slovenia will follow.

2019

The international jury of “50 Best Vineyards of the World” selects the winery Tement to be the 15th most worth visiting winery in the world. Tement is head on head with internationally famous wineries like Antinori, Opus One or Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte.

Partnerships

The STK-wineries

To vinify wines with a unique character and to highlight the expression of terroir of the best vineyards, is the stated goal of the 12 STK wineries. The group “Styrian Terroir and Classic Wineries” is a free association of wineries with the utmost commitment towards region-typical wine culture. It follows up on the in 1986 founded group “Styrian Classic Winegrowers”, an association itself that managed to put a name on fruit-driven white wines of typical Styrian grape varieties. From 1993 those wines officially were allowed to be called “Steirische Klassik” (“Styrian Classic”).

With the classification of Single-Vineyards, the premium league of Styrian vineyards get defined and with a clear quality signature also easily recognizable: The letters “STK” printed on the capsule or label. “STK” is the quality seal for unique Styrian wines and protected trademark of the wineries Frauwallner, Gross, Lackner-Tinnacher, Wolfgang Maitz, Neumeister, Erich & Walter Polz, Erwin Sabathi, Hannes Sabathi, Sattlerhof, Tement, Winkler-Hermaden and Wohlmuth. Only wines
that fall under the defined rules and quality requirements are allowed to wear that sign.

People and Passions

that have found each other

Alfred Wermut

Between 1974 and 1979 Alfred Wermut and Manfred Tement went to school together. Now forty years later a creative blend of both their cellars is reconnecting them. Alfred (ALois and manFRED). The new Vermouth from old friends. The base wines for this exceptional Vermouth from Manfred Tements cellar are classical, fruit driven and elegant. Alois Goelles is adding character and liveliness with the fine brandies he is known for.

Selected botanicals and the forceful and astringent power of the vermouth make ALFRED a distinctive and elegant bitter at the same time. All characteristics that we enjoy and that we can - at the same time - easily use to describe the friends Manfred and Alois as well.
